Mazda RX-7 on the market in 2016!
This news will probably cheer up every Mazda fan around the globe. Widely acclaimed RX -7 in the new generation comes in the form of light and agile two-seater driven with at least 250 hp, powerful rotary engine and its arrival has reportedly been scheduled for 2016.
Although the words of Mazda’s CEO, who said that the rotary engine in sports car are not in Mazda’s production plans as long as these cars are not considered to be cost effective, are still fresh it looks like he has changed his mind. Sometimes cars are produced based on not very rational and emotional decisions just to show the innovative abilities of the company-producer. Although it was announced that the rotary engine will have a future as an aggregate-generator in electric models, in the prototype Mazda 2 EV with 330 cc rotary aggregate to be more precise, some great news that indicate that this type of engine is being developed as an independent engine that will hopefully be part of the new Mazda RX-7.
That means that this project has not yet received approval to begin preparation for mass production, meaning that the final design of 2016 Mazda RX-7 is not yet précised but that the developing of the unit is continuing regardless of the design. The rotary engine will most likely have two chambers, or maybe three, and reduced capacity of 600 cc per chamber compared to 654 cc of RX-8.
The area that has always been the weak link is the sealing of the unit, a segment that is constantly experiencing improvements. With a capacity of 1.2 liters, which is equivalent of 2,4 liters engine with conventional construction and thanks to the solved sealing, the new Mazda RX-7 will have increased compression ratio, which will further result in improved thermal utilization, higher power and cleaner combustion.
When it comes to horse powers some reliable sources suggest that Mazda will go with engines with more than 250 hp but under 300 hp. It may seem weak, but in combination with the lightweight body, it will be an equal competitor to the Toyota GT86 and Nissan 370Z. 2016 Mazda RX-7 will be based on the derivative platform that Mazda developed with Fiat Group, and Alfa Romeo.
The car itself will take identical simplified design philosophy that will decorate the new MX-5 roadster expected in 2015. The head of design at Mazda, who is also leading this project, says that he is not sure how exactly the new Mazda Rx-7 will look like but he says that the public will know the details soon.
According to their previously published business plan, Mazda is planning to present five new models by 2016. Mazda Rx-7 is one of these models. So far there are no concrete plans about further development of the project, but clearly there is a strong desire within the company to develop such car.
